Drinkables DIY Champagne Cocktails

Champagne is probably one of the more celebrated of the spirits. It’s just too bubbly and too darn delicious to even question the pedestal it has been put on. You may gasp at the idea of using it for cocktails, but we promise mimosas were just the start of the wonderful things that can be done with a champagne and a dream.

Champagne is one of those drinks you may not have had often. Let’s face it a good bottle can run you more than any two other items in your liquor cabinet combined. Still its worth noting that there are good more affordable brands. It is also worth noting that champagne is a drink that comes in a whole array of sweetness.

The biggest mistake people make when trying champagne is trying only ONE champagne and deciding how they feel about the rest of them based on that one drink. When looking for your bottle a great way to make sure you get something close to what you like is to know how sweet you or the person your buying for likes their drink.

Here is a quick and easy list from least to most sweet champagnes based on type:

• Extra Brut – Less than 6 grams of sugar.
• Brut – Less than 12 grams of sugar.
• Extra Dry – between 12 and 17 grams of sugar.
• Sec – between 17 and 32 grams of sugar.
• Demi-Sec – between 32 and 50 grams of sugar.
• Doux – 50 grams of sugar.

Brut is one of the more common styles of Champagne, it’s a nice crisp taste with just a hint of sweetness. Anything sec, demi-sec, or doux, is a good dessert champagne. Keep in mind the type of champagne you have when mixing cocktails, you may find you need to add a little simple syrup for the more dry varieties.
