DIY Black Velvet

Beer Romance

This surprising drink is credited with being created in a bar in London in 1861. It’s a robust and simple drink that may have a few of your friends questioning if they should try it. It’s strong and unusual. A drink made for people with adventurous pallets that appreciate bold flavors.

Ingredients:

Beer - If you want to be 100% classic go for Guinness, the Extra Stout line is the ideal choice for this study of contrasts. But any good dark stout beer will do.

Champagne - you can use whatever champagne you like, but don’t go for a top shelf bottle. Something dry will cut this drink nicely, but a sweet bottle will do wonders for opening up the chocolate notes in a stout.

To create the dramatic layers in this drink you want to have a bar spoon (or any long metal spoon that will fit in a glass) on hand, and use a tall glass. While simple, if poured correctly, a Black Velvet drink is second-to-none on simple and elegant presentation. You’ll make each glass by hand using:

  • 4 oz Champagne
  • 4 oz Guinness

Poor the champagne into the glass, then carefully layer the Guinness over it. If you put a spoon in the glass with the back up you can poor the Guinness over that to help gently layer the drink over the champagne. The effect is instant and quite striking, but it’s got nothing on the taste. This surprising duo will be a drink that is sure to stick with you for a lifetime.
